We ran out of time today to talk further about the documentary, Two Towns of Jasper. I'd like to hear more of your reflections on the film, its making, and its lessons--both about the challenges of doing documentary work (think: location) and about our larger conversation on identity. Given the very difficult material the film puts before our eyes and ears, it's worth remembering from the outset that the purpose of this discussion is to explore how the film deepends our understanding of racism and privilege in the United States. Please consider before you post how your comments might impact others in the class--while differences in interpretation are healthy and inevitable given our different locations, your thoughtfulness toward each other--and for that matter, toward the folks in the film--will help keep our conversation moving forward.

Reading Race, Performing Race--Parameters and Potentials

Tonight you'll hear a talk by Brenda Dixon Gottschild, a cultural historian, choreographer and performer. Her recent book, The Black Dancing Body: A Geography from Coon to Cool, challenges the concept of race by interrogating the perceptions, images, and assumptions, both past and present, that have accumulated around this topic. Her talk will help us start thinking about identity, and the moral and ethical challenges of documenting identity. In this space, members of the Doc Research community, can carry on discussion about the topics she raises, and help each other consider how her talk helps us in the work of documenting identity.
